In the heart of the Côte de Beaune, two iconic appellations exquisitely express the richness of Burgundy's Pinot Noir: Pommard and Beaune. While these two villages are neighbors, their wines possess distinct styles. Here, we humbly offer a glimpse into the nuances that make up the magic of Burgundy's terroirs!

Pommard: power, structure and depth

Pommard is often considered one of the most structured red wine appellations in the Côte de Beaune. Here, the Pinot Noir reveals:

  • A beautiful aromatic intensity (black fruits, ripe cherry, spices)

  • Present and elegant tannins

  • A solid structure offering excellent storage potential

The iron-rich clay-limestone soils contribute to this distinctive character. A Pommard is captivating for its depth and its ability to age beautifully. At Domaine Michel Arcelain , we strive for a balance between power and finesse, in order to express the full nobility of our terroir.

We can only recommend our Pommard 1er cru "Charmots" .

Beaune: elegance, finesse and accessibility

The Beaune appellation, more extensive and composed of numerous Premier Cru classified climats — including the famous Clos des Mouches — offers a style that is often more supple and airy.

Beaune wines generally offer:

  • Aromas of fresh red fruits (raspberry, redcurrant)

  • A more delicate texture

  • Fine and silky tannins

  • An approach that is sometimes more accessible in their youth

Of course, each climate has its own personality, but Beaune often embodies a more elegant and immediately charming expression of Pinot Noir.

And to compare with Pommard, our Beaune 1er cru "Clos des Mouches" is ideal!

Same grape variety but with different expressions

What makes the comparison fascinating is that Pommard and Beaune are based on the same grape variety: Pinot Noir.

"Yet, the terroir — soil composition, exposure, microclimates — profoundly influences the style of the wine. Just a few kilometers away, one goes from a more assertive structure to a more delicate finesse."

This is the richness of Burgundy: a patchwork of climates where each plot tells a different story.

Pommard or Beaune: which wine to choose?

  • Do you like powerful, structured wines made for aging? → Pommard

  • Are you looking for refinement, elegance, and instant charm? → Beaune

Of course, the aim is not to pit these two appellations against each other, but to understand their respective identities. At Domaine Michel Arcelain, we are proud to contribute to the expression of the Pommard terroir and to participate in the diversity and prestige of great Burgundy wines 🍷
